Everyday Veteran

Steve is an Iraq and Afghanistan veteran. Upon arriving home three years ago from his final tour to Afghanistan he found out that his wife had been cheating on him and had spent or stole almost all of their money. Steve had nowhere to stay, no phone and was suffering from severe anxiety problems. One of his close friends from high school, Shawn, and his wife, took Steve in and let him live with their family of five. They’ve helped him deal with his divorce and get his life together. Since then, Steve’s moved into his own place, opened a diner, and his friend’s kids call him Uncle Steve when they see him.

This is the love of Jesus’ unconditional love.  We’re His kids and no matter what mess we’re in, He’s there, ready to make redemptive use of our mess. Even on our worst days God stands with His door wide open and says; “Come in,” everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGriffith.com

Everyday Strong Will

I have a strong will. I’m sure someone listening right now can totally relate to the fact that while our spirits may be strong and willing our flesh fails us time and time again. Jesus tells us we do not "watch and pray".  The flesh does not conquer the spirit. The flesh is weak - as Jesus said - and the flesh is a stumbling block to our spirit.  I want to go to church on Sunday mornings but I’m tired so my flesh gets its way and later I have regrets. I have to pray and set my mind and will the night before to get up in the morning.  My prayer is often this simple, “God You’re stronger and You live in me. Help. Amen.” Sharing areas of weaknesses, with someone, also helps for accountability and strength too. You can overcome.  Jesus is there. He’s never mad at you and when you do fall He will help you get back up. He loves you and He’ll never give up on you. Don’t give up on yourself…everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGriffith.com

Everyday I don’t want to

If you’re a mom you’ve heard; “I don’t want to.  It’s not fair.”  And if you’re like me your sure fire response has been, “Life’s not fair.”  BUT “back in the day,” when my four sons were young, I’d respond; “I understand you don’t think it’s fair and I’m sorry you don’t want to.  But right now I’m not interested in what you want.  I’m interested in your obedience.”   At first my boys didn’t really hear me and continued with the, “It’s not fair,” and “I don’t want to” but firmly I repeated my statement, “I’m not open to discussion, I’m the mom and I’m in charge here.”  I wanted to help my four sons develop character to receive and understand the blessings that obedience brings.

“Yep”… my oldest responded, “Thanks Mom,” when I read Proverbs 30:17 “The eye that scorns obedience to his mother will be pecked out by the ravens of the valley.”  Thankfully, (through it all) my children still have their eyesight. It’s through obedience we receive our blessings …everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGrifith.com

Everyday Authentic Christian

If your life is one that reflects radical, authentic Christianity, then you are making people either bitter or better by contact with you. But one thing cannot happen: people will never remain the same. No one ever came into contact with Jesus and went away the same.  An authentic Christian strives to love and live as Jesus did.
Put your name in the blank when you read 1 Corinthians 13: and ask yourself if that is true of you:  “I am patient and kind. I am not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. I do not demand my own way. I am not irritable, and I keep no record of being wronged. I rejoice whenever the truth wins out.  I never give up, never lose faith, and I am always hopeful. I endure through every circumstance.” Wow. Living a life of love is our highest calling. Are you and I walking in love?” because “if we don’t love others then we’ve gained nothing”…everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGriffith.com

Everyday Thank You God for Everything

How many crabby days should you have in a row before you think you need to make a change?  How about on Day One? Oh I get you, I know it is hard when life is hard but try this: For every one thing going wrong in your life, there are ten things going right. Don’t think about your problems. Don’t talk about your problems. Don’t exaggerate your problems and then look at Philippians 2:14 “Do all things without complaining.”

Try thinking and talking obsessively about your blessings. Take a few minutes to rapid fire each blessing that comes to mind or make a written list of your top 10 blessings and then hold that list in your hand and rapid fire say what you’re thankful for out loud.  This earth experience is hard. It’s not our home but there is always something to be thankful for. Stay focused on what is true. You are enough and many are thankful for who you are…everyday. Everyday God says: I AM

Think about how crazy it was for Moses to hear God speaking from a burning bush.  It seems a little weird too. God speaks in love but He’s direct when He tells Moses, “Get to Egypt, get my people and GO!”  And when Moses asks “What should I say to the people when they ask me your name?” it seems that God didn’t want to spend a lot of time telling Moses all the things He was, so He simply said in Exodus 3:14, “Tell My people I AM has sent Me to you!”  “Okay, whatever that means”, Moses must have thought but upon “seeing” who God was Moses probably realized that I AM meant everything!

God IS saying, “What you need… I AM!  I AM your navigator, speaker, provider, comforter, and strength …I AM EVERYTHING YOU NEED when you need it…everyday!”  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGriffith.com

Everyday Hair Stylist

My hair…it’s a big part of my life so how great it is that the relationship I have with my hair also spills over to the relationship I have with my hair stylist.  Each time I have an appointment I’ve been able to tell my hairdresser what God is doing in my life.  And I’m surprised, no matter who my hair stylist is, how interested they are in listening to me talk about God.  In the past there were times I felt fearful, embarrassed or even defensive when sharing my faith but now I get excited because I’m sharing my relationship and not a religion.  Sharing my relationship and the power of God’s love is fun because everything just seems to flow and come out naturally.

Without love we really can’t communicate the freedom and peace God has for us. But by knowing 1 Corinthians 13:8; “Love never fails” we can actually have success when reaching out to others…everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit DebbieGriffith.com

Everyday Marriage Advice

The other day I read this article giving me the “Do’s and Don’ts” on how to get a grip on a marriage gone bad.  Some points were good such as; “Do speak honestly of your unhappiness to your partner and don’t bad mouth your spouse to your friends” BUT the “DO” that really threw me was; “Put yourself at the center of your life, go deep within yourself to find your strength.”  I said out loud, “Are you kidding me, I’d just get depressed?”  But the writer continues, “Who can be the center of your life but you?”

I know the answer!  JESUS!  He should be the center of our lives!  And when He’s not that’s when we have problems, not only in marriage but in everything.  I just read some great “DO’S and DON’TS” in Philippians 2: 3 and 4; “DO regard others better than yourself and DO NOT be selfish, thinking only of yourself.”  What great advice from the Counselor who has all the answers...everyday.

Everyday Jesus' Shoulders

I remember sharing a message with the teen youth group.  I chose Isaiah 9:6 which begins; For unto us a Child is born, to us a Son is given; and the government shall be upon His shoulder…”  And I thought how the government that is upon Jesus’ shoulders is not a political government but really refers to the governing in our lives. We are not supposed to be running our own lives. In fact, we aren’t qualified. I certainly don’t have the brains to know what is best so I’m so super thankful for HIS intervention and His love to guide my life.  You see, the more God’s government increases in your life, the more He directs your thoughts, conversations, decision and action, well the more you have peace!

You need to be right with God just like I do so we have the peace on what He’s done and not what we’ve done.  For me it was all about being on stage as an actress but now I see it’s  not about my position or personality but about seeking HIM first where He fills me up with all I need…everyday.  For more encouragement in Everyday Matters visit Debbie Griffith.com

Everyday I Can’t Change

Even before I begin to encourage you I can hear some of you crying:

“BUT Debbie just listen to this injustice in my life…it’s so not fair!”

“BUT Debbie I don’t have a godly husband and my life is ruined because of him.”

“BUT Debbie I’m not like you I can’t just call on scripture when I need it!”

“BUT Debbie I know I shouldn’t care so much what others think but I can’t change.”

It sounds like a lot of you have “BIG-BUT SYNDROME.”  Because there will always be excuses and even good reasons why you feel the need to start many of your sentences with “But-But… I can’t because…”  But I’m telling ya while you can’t change someone else you can allow God to change you and the things you think on.

How about following what Romans 12:2 has to share; “Let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think”…everyday.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. The fruit you grow is rooted in God and comes from Him. Since it comes from God, it’s stable and not like worldly happiness, which is merely emotional based on what “happens" to you.
Let’s grow with the bright burst of love that God brings to you and I as we walk in faith, not fear.
